Lover, Lover (C. Cook)

Lover, lover, you're my best friend.
You've got me standin', standin' on end.
Lover, lover, now you did me wrong.
You've got me crawlin' on my knees singin' old blues songs.
Old blues songs, old Muddy Waters' songs.

I called your house this past Saturday night,
To take my baby to go eat a bite.
When I got there, oh, I thought I would die.
I saw you and your new lover layin' side by side.
Side by side, right there where me and my baby used to lay.

My heart is fryin' like an egg in a pan.
You threw my love in the garbage can.
I just can't stand it. Can't stand the pain.
You've got me crawlin' on my knees in the pourin' down rain.

Well, now, my heart is fryin' like an egg in a pan.
You threw my love in the garbage can.
I just can't stand it. I can't stand the pain.
You've got me crawlin' on my knees in the pourin' down rain.

Lover, lover you're my best friend.
You've got me standin', standin' on end.
Lover, lover, now you did me wrong.
You've got me crawlin' on my knees singin' old blues songs.

Lover, lover, you're my best friend.
You've got me standin', standin' on end.
Lover, lover, now you did me wrong.
Got me crawlin' on my knees, singin' old blues songs.

Lover, lover you were my best friend.

Tonight I Need a Friend (C. Cook)

Hey baby! Have we met somewhere before?
Your face looked so familiar when you walked through the door.
Well, do ya' have somewhere to be? Do ya' have a man who's strong?
I couldn't help but notice that you walked in all alone, mmmmmmm

So please sit right here beside me, I got a broken heart to mend.
I'm not looking for a lover but I sure could use a friend.
Don't misunderstand me and I'll tell you once again, mmmmmmm
I'm not thinkin' 'bout tomorrow, 'cause tonight I need a friend.

Love is the last thing on my mind.
I'd surely hate to waste all of your precious time.
Please, don't refuse me. I mean no harm to you.
Before the night is over I want someone I can talk to...yes, I do.

So please sit right here beside me, I got a broken heart to mend.
I'm not looking for a lover but I sure could use a friend...yea, yea.
So, don't misunderstand me, then I'll tell you once again... mmmmmmm
I'm not lookin' for a lover but I sure could use a friend...yea, yea, yea
I sure could use a friend, how 'bout you?
Well I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know...I sure could use a friend.
Well I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know... I sure could use a friend.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah I sure could use a friend.

Black Door (C. Cook)

Everybody got one, you know I got one, too.
A good man's opinion, don't mean a thing to you.
You made a dumb ass move, said some bad things too.
So don't roll me in the creek just yet and
Remember who you're talkin' to.
So don't get pissed at me if we disagree
'Cause we've got two points of view.
I know who you are and I know where you've been,
But where the hell are you goin' to?

You can say what you want, it don't matter to me
'Cause it ain't worth the time to fight.
You can't turn a country boy into a city slicker.
You can't paint a black door white...hey, hey
You can't paint a black door white.

You can't stop the world from turnin'.
You can't run the Great Lake dry.
You can't swim up Niagara Falls.
There's no need in wonderin' why.
You can't buy love and happiness
Or say that it just ain't right.
I ain't changin' you, you ain't changin' me
'Cause you can't paint a black door white.

Everybody got opinions
About the way they think it ought to be.
Some things are better left unspoken, yea.
I say that sometimes ya' gotta' keep it,
Sometimes ya' gotta' keep it,
Sometimes ya' gotta' keep it to yourself.

Well, so don't get pissed at me if we disagree
'Cause we've got two points of view.
I know who you are and I know where you been
But where the hell are you goin' to?
You can say what you want, it don't matter to me
'Cause it ain't worth the time to fight.
Can't turn a country boy into a city slicker
And you can't paint a black door white.
Can't paint, can't paint a black door white.

Don't Go in There (C. Cook)

I honestly appreciate your gestures of affection.
But what could be the reason for my verdict of rejection?
I let you know from the get-go, right from the very start,
You might get lacerations from the edges of my heart.
I know it hurts to lose a lover, they say that all in love is fair.
You can't say I didn't warn you.
Don't go in there, don't go in there.

I'm just a bag of emotions, more than just a few
And I keep trying to find some answers, but girl until I do
You keep a long arm's reach and watch how far you go.
'Cause my heart's an angry tidal wave and I thought you'd want to know.
I won't lead you on or say the things I think you want to hear.
You better go 'cause you'll never know just what goes on in here.

So, don't go in there.
Don't go in there, no, no, no.
I've said it before so enter if you dare.
You better listen to me good,
Don't go in there.

So if you try to get inside, don't bend or break the key
And if you do and get your feelings hurt, you can blame it all on me.
Because the love I had before is still a page too soon to tear
From the story of my heart.
It's not yet safe to go in there.

So don't go in there,
Don't go in there, no, no, no.
I've said it before, so enter if you dare
You better listen to me good.
Don't go in there.
So don't go in there,
Don't go in there, no, no, no.
I've said it before so enter if you dare.
You better listen to me, girl.
Don't go in there.
Don't go in there.
Don't go in there.

I Love You Too Much (C. Cook)

When I see you on the street, I'll say to you,
"There's so many things I need to do."
Then I'll tell you just before our confrontation ends
"Girl, I love you too much to be your friend."

When you call me on the phone, I'll say "hello".
Then I'll have to say "I need to go."
Then I'll tell you just before our conversation ends,
"Girl, I love you too much to be your friend."

You say you'd rather just be friends instead of fools in love,
But you're offering something that I've got plenty of,
Because my friends have only let me down time and time again.
Girl I love you too much to ever be...

When I see you with somebody new,
I'll say, "I'm glad you found somethin' to put your heart into."
Then just before you walk away I'll say it once again,
"Girl, I love you too much to be your friend."

You say you'd rather just be friends instead of fools in love,
But you're offering me something that I've got plenty of,
Because my friends have only let me down time and time again.
And girl, I love you too much to ever be your friend.

Tears (C. Cook)

Time must be borrowed.
Ends must be tied.
The good times remembered,
And the bad times let die.
Pride must be swallowed.
Convictions be tried.
The fire keeps on burning and
Tears must be cried.

Hearts must be broken
When two worlds collide.
Decisions decided,
And tears must be cried.

Hearts must be broken
When two worlds collide.
Decisions decided,
And tears must be cried.

Yeah, hearts must be broken
And tears must be cried.

Signals From Above (M. Yarborough, C. Cook)

One summer mornin' before I arose
I could have sworn I felt you tickle my toes.
Just before I decided to peek,
I felt you gently caressin' my cheek.
But much to my surprise, when I opened my eyes,
It wasn't you, my love you know,
Only the sun shinin' through the window.

Sittin' on the front porch late in the eve
I could have sworn I heard you talking to me.
When I stood up to follow the sound,
For some funny reason you just couldn't be found.
Screamin' out, "God help me find you,
Lead me to where ever you are."
I realized all I was hearin'
Was the twinklin' of a star,
The sound of a twinklin' star.

I thank the Lord for my blessin's
But more for His great gift of love.
I only hope He keeps sendin' me
Signals from above,
Signals from above,
Ohhhhh, signals from above.

Hey, I thank the Lord for my blessin'
But more for His great gift of love
I only hope He keeps sendin' me
Signals from above,
Signals from above,
Signals from above,
Signals from above, woah...ohhh
Signals from above, yeah, yeah...mmmmm

Three Chord Joe (C. Cook)

Well, listen all, now did you ever know about the rise and fall of Three Chord Joe?
Come around all the time causin' a fuss,
Three chords and a cloud of dust.
Well, he was born on a bus in 1965, a chip on his shoulder and blood shot eyes.
Drug up rough, hungry, and hard by the railroad tracks at that old junkyard.

He had a stutter when he talked, a sailor's tongue I'm told,
Stagger when he walked with a chain billfold.
But he ain't ever gonna' be no star, no,
At the Juke Joint Jump or the Cross Town Bar.

Well, he started out down at the Park and Fight
For free booze and twenty five dollars a night.
Rough around the edges as a man can be,
Playin' by the light of the poker machine.
Well, she came downtown every Saturday night,
Her hair all a mess and her jeans on tight.
Everybody said, "Hey, Joe, leave her alone!",
A tear in her eye and a bad man at home.

A stutter when he talked, a sailor's tongue I'm told,
A stagger when he walked with a chain billfold.
But he ain't ever gonna' be no star, no,
At the Juke Joint Jump or the Cross Town Bar.

Well, Joe didn't know he's gonna' wake up dead,
A knife in his back and a bullet to the head.
You live by the sword, die by the same.
Ain't nobody left to carry his name.

Said "Listen all, did you ever know about the rise and fall of Three Chord Joe?"
Come around all the time a causin' a fuss,
Three chords and a cloud of dust...
Three chords and a cloud of dust...
Three chords and a cloud of dust...
Three chords and a cloud of dust...
Three chords and a cloud of dust...
Three chords and a cloud of dust...
Three chords

Ten Times the Blues (C. Cook)

All those sleepless nights you spent alone
In this lonely house.
So foolish to believe it didn't bother you,
But I know that now.
Now, this heart of mine never burned that long
Like it does for you.
And all these feelin's plus you leavin' simply comes out
To ten times the blues.

All those rainy days while I was away
And you stayed at home.
So selfish to believe it never bothered you
To be alone.
All this emptiness that's inside of me
While I'm missin' you,
Oh, still missin' you.
All these feelings plus you leavin' simply comes out
To ten times the blues.

And I can't bear the thought of ever losing you
But I will go away if you want me to.
And time won't heal the pain in the pourin' down rain,
Like drops of your memory
Beatin' down on me.

All those sleepless nights that I spend alone
Here in this lonely house.
So foolish to believe I'd never be so weak.
But I know that now
If we could go back to the very start when our love was new, still brand new, baby.
But time knows only one way to go as I lie here wearing those shoes.
All these feelin's plus you leavin' simply comes out
To ten times the blues.
Ten times the blues.

Life is Good (C. Cook)

Well, I'm sittin' on the back porch, sippin' whiskey and tea.
Sometimes I wonder about what's gonna' happen to me,
'Cause I know I don't live quite the way I should, but
I tell you people, life is good, oh it's good.

I go runnin' up and down the road, drinkin' on the job.
Some know me as a nice guy and others a snob.
By the way, I don't get paid as much as I think I should, but I say it again I said "Hey, life is good."
Oh it's good, mmmm, gettin' better every day.

Well it never pays to moan and complain.
It might make us all feel better at the time.
We've got a right to be happy, it's a sin not to smile.
Sometimes it's just around the corner,
Sometimes you gotta' crawl for miles.
A job is a job, this you must understand.
Whether you're hammerin' sixteen penny nails or you're playin' in the band.
Everybody got to keep on carryin' water and keep on choppin' wood.
Then I'll tell you one more time, I said life is good,
Oh, it's good, good, good,
Gettin' better every day.

Well, It never pays to moan and complain
It might make us all feel better at the time, yeah
We've got a right to be happy, it's a sin not to smile
Sometimes it's just around the corner
Sometimes you gotta' crawl for miles.
Don't live for tomorrow and don't dwell in the past.
Just take every breath in deep, like it's gonna' be your last.
And I know I don't live quite the way I should, but I tell you people
Life is good, oh it's good.
But I'll say it again,
I said "Hey, life is good, oh it's good."
But I'll say it again,
I said "Hey, Lord! Lord! Oooohh?
Life is good."

Party's Over (C. Cook)

Bad cookin' goin' on in the kitchen,
Somebody wakin' up on the floor.
Another pretty girl with her heart broke
On the other side of the back screen door.
A thief is pickin' pockets in the back yard.
What kind of pills might he be on?
Lookin' for a ride to the liquor store
While some stranger's answerin' my telephone.

Well now, I'm here to say that today is the day!
I could use a little time all alone.
The party's over, turn on the lights.
The party's over, give me back my life.
I said, "The party's over, can't take it no more.
Everybody make their way to the door.,
'Cause the party's over."

Well, they're makin' funny noises in the bathroom.
I wonder what keeps takin' them so long?
Somebody dancin' naked in my livin' room,
Yeah, Sometimes I wish they'd all go home.
Yeah, but I'm the one who invited 'em all here.
I guess that's what I wanted at the time.
But now the whole neighborhood is dancin' in the front yard,
Raisin' hell and more than just drinkin' wine.

Yea now, I'm here to say that today is the day!
It don't mean the good times are all gone.
But now the party's over, turn on the lights.
The party's over, give me back my life.
I said, "The party's over, I can't take it no more.
Everybody make their way to the door,
'Cause the party's over."

Well, I've had all the fun that one man can stand.
I don't think I'll ever drink again.
I think about leavin' town on a fast train, baby,
Maybe move in with my next of kin.
How many times I got to tell myself
That ain't no way to live or die?
Ain't no way to live or die.

Well now, I'm here to say that today is the day!
I could use a little time all alone,
But now the party's over, turn on the lights.
The party's over, give me back my life.
I said, "The party's over, can't take it no more
Everybody make their way to the door."

I said "The party's over, turn on the lights.
The party's over, give me back my life."
I said, "The party's over , can't take it no more.
Everybody make their way to the door,
'Cause I'm tired of wakin' up on the floor.
The party's over."
Party's over!
